A look at the featured highlights from issue 231

THE COVER STARS! – 1965 CHEVROLET NOVAS

With a 468ci big-block Chev for the street, and a blown 540ci for the strip, the Oldfield family’s love of Chev Novas has all bases covered!

Glen Oldfield has been into Novas for most of his life, largely due to his father, Pat, picking one up when he was young. We cover Pat’s mean street Nova, back-halved long ago by Chris Tynan, as well as Glen’s insanely quick track Nova — which has recently been built for boost, creeping closer to the 7-second mark.

FUTURE FALCON — 1969 FORD FALCON XT

Family heirlooms aren’t always boring old clocks or vases; Jamie Etridge built this 1969 Ford Falcon XT with the next generation in mind.

With a young son growing up, Jamie Etridge set to work on creating an incredible future gift to his boy. With the body restored from the ground up, and featuring a built 347ci Ford crate engine with a five-speed manual, we know his son will be dreaming of the day he’s old enough to drive it.

BEATING THE CLOCK — 1973 HOLDEN TORANA LJ

In 2023, Luke Miller was given very, very bad news; since then, he’s been fighting hard to fulfil his drag racing dream, with some incredible mates, and a large chunk of the racing community behind him

After being given only a couple of years to live, Luke decided to get serious about his drag racing bucket list dream. Along the way, he’s been helped by the likes of Tony Marsh, Mike Reid, and many other prolific racers, as his LJ Torana gradually evolved into a 407ci Dart blocked weapon. And he’s still getting faster!

BLOWN AWAY — 1987 HOLDEN COMMODORE VK

Robert’s supercharged VK Commodore is any red-blooded Holden fanatic’s dream. It stays true to the raw sound of the Iron Lion, shifts with three pedals, and puts out a healthy 600hp at the wheels.

After a huge mishap early into his ownership of this VK, Robert did what any good petrolhead would do, and used it as a good excuse to upgrade things further — resulting in this badass Commodore.

25 YEARS DEEP – OLD SKOOL RYDZ ANNIVERSARY

Old Skool Rydz has just ticked over 25 years, starting as NZ’s very first lowrider club. We asked long-standing member Josh Trybula to detail their recent celebration event and recount some of what’s happened over the past two decades.

It’s hard not to turn your head and stare in awe when you see a lowrider drive past. So when we heard there would be dozens of them gathering on one Wellington weekend, we figured we’d better check it out.
