The sights. The sounds. The smell. As far as motorsport spectacles go, it doesn’t get much better than side-by-side nitro funny car racing. It’s not often Kiwi race fans get to experience the pure assault to the senses that this particular brand of drag racing provides, but come Saturday, 21 March, Masterton Motorplex has it well and truly covered with round two of the Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Car New Zealand Tour.

This will be the biggest contingent of these wild machines ever seen in the lower North Island, and Bob Wilton, manager of Masterton Motorplex, is stoked to see it happen. “Eight of these cars are coming over from Sydney, and they put on an awesome display,” he says. “Every one of them is capable of mid-five-second passes and 260mph, so there’s going to be plenty of action.” The single-day event is also a full competition meeting, meaning all classes will be well- represented. As a final cherry on the top of this action-packed meet, Aussie wheelie queen Chelsea Leahy’s outrageous wheel-standing Nitro Sheriff Camaro will be running full quarter-mile passes on nothing but the rear Mickey–Thompsons all day long.

With a large range of merchandise on offer and a kids’ zone full of everything a young nitro fan could possibly need to stay entertained, this will be one of the biggest days ever seen at Masterton Motorplex. If you’re anywhere near the lower North Island — or even if you’re not — this is one meet you don’t want to miss. Gate entry is $40 per person, with kids under 14 free.
