NZV8 Columnist and drag racer Morice McMillin has been one of the stars of the Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Car show since his stunning debut at Sydney Dragway in 2015. The young Kiwi will again be travelling to Australia to race against the series’ best, as the McMillin crew prepare to head north to Queensland’s Willowbank Raceway for April 30.
The One Bad Kiwi Trans-Am and McMillin himself were stars of the series’ recent trip to Perth Motorplex, and the team are looking to improve further, once they take to the iconic Queensland track.
The Perth Motorplex event also saw the car and driver achieve personal-best performances with a 5.76-second quarter-mile sprint at a massive 404kph. McMillin explained, “I still have only made nine runs total in the car! We are so happy with the way it is coming together. I’m feeling more and more comfortable with every pass.
“I also have to give a massive thanks to Aaron Hambridge, who is really starting to get a handle on the tune-up, with what [was] essentially a new combo when we debuted the car.
“For myself and the entire team, we just can’t wait to race on a world-class surface like Willowbank Raceway. If we can follow up from where we left off in Perth and keep on improving run by run, then hopefully we may be able to trouble some of the big names in this series — and that has to be the goal.”
The Willowbank event will be a new experience for McMillin, but the racing surface is one that he has been on once before. “I was lucky enough to race junior dragsters at Willowbank when I was 14 years old, so it’s been a while,” Morice said with a smile.
“I still have to pinch myself to think that the next time I get to race there, [I] will be in an Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Car for Graeme and Wendy Cowin, it really is a dream come true.”
And how have the Aussies embraced him?
“The guys have been great. Racing with the Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Car series is just so much fun, with some really good camaraderie between the teams, but the moment you get in that seat, all that’s forgotten and you’re out there to win.”
You can catch McMillin and the team in action at Willowbank Raceway, Ipswich, Queensland on April 30.
