The abundance of cool cars in the lower North Island is a sight to behold when they are all gathered in one place, and that one place just happened to be Kapiti School in Paraparaumu, where the Gear Jammers Rod and Muscle Car Club held their show on Sunday, March 15.
To put on a spectacular show you need a talented and dedicated bunch, and it appears that is exactly what the Kapiti-based club have in spades.
As you can see from the sheer number of cars and people that turned up, this show is quite a popular one. No doubt increasing the numbers of attendees was the hot and sunny Kapiti Coast weather. Not only were there some seriously cool cars on display, there was also plenty of other stuff to keep everyone entertained.
Rocker-cover racing is pretty much the most basic of all sports, all you need is some old, painted-up, rocker covers and Sir Isaac Newton’s magical gravity!
Food is also a good thing and nothing attracts a crowd quite like an incinerated snarler and the pretty much obligatory steak sammie. Check out the barbie these guys used to whip up the gastronomic delights — now that’s seriously cool.
Around the outskirts of the field was a smattering of trade stalls of the automotive kind. Ranging from folk who could tell you everything you need to know about bringing a car into the country, to those who could fix you up with some flash new clothes.
Taking centre stage, and stealing the show, were these little future beauty queens. Comprehensively winning the People’s Choice vote in the fashion show — they really were cuties.
We don’t know how much fuel this old fire engine consumed over the duration of the day but there was hardly a moment when it wasn’t covered with kids enjoying the circuit they were taken on around the gathered cars.
Consuming far more than the fire engine, and making considerably much more noise in the process, were the competition cars. With regular fire ups, the gathered crowd were treated to a methanol shower and an ear-bleeding cacophony of noise that you generally only experience at a drag strip, not across the road from a shopping centre on the field of a primary school.
All in all a great day was had, it’s the first time we have attended the show and we were quite impressed with the turnout. Make sure you put a big ring around next year’s date on your calendar when it’s announced, you will not be disappointed.
